Week 1 Worked Example
This example shows how a vague design idea becomes a usable problem statement. Use it as a model, not as something to copy.
Starting Point
I want to design a better desk organiser.
This is weak because it starts with the object. It does not explain who needs it, what is going wrong, or why the design matters.
Observation
| Question | Worked example answer |
|---|---|
| Who is affected? | A creative learner working at a small desk at home. |
| Where does it happen? | At a narrow desk used for sketching, laptop work, note-taking, and storing basic tools. |
| What is the difficulty? | Pens, rulers, cables, sketchbooks, phone, sticky notes, and model-making materials spread across the desk and interrupt focus. |
| Why does it matter? | The learner loses time clearing space, misplaces tools, and finds it harder to start creative work. |
Assumptions To Test Later
- The learner needs the most-used tools visible rather than hidden away.
- The desk surface is small and cannot hold a large storage unit.
- The learner switches between analogue and digital work often.
- Clutter makes the learner less likely to begin work.
- A low-cost solution would be more useful than a premium product.
Problem Statement
A creative learner working at a small desk needs a way to keep essential tools visible, organised, and easy to move, because clutter interrupts focus and makes creative work harder to start.
How Might We Question
How might we help a creative learner keep essential tools visible and organised in a small workspace without making the desk feel cluttered?
Why This Works
- It names a specific user: a creative learner working at a small desk.
- It identifies a real difficulty: tools and materials interrupt focus.
- It explains the impact: creative work becomes harder to start.
- It avoids choosing the final solution too early.
- It creates a direction for research, ideation, prototyping, and testing.
Architecture Track Variation
A learner using a compact creative learning pod needs focus, storage, natural light, and protection from nearby noise, because distraction and poor organisation reduce the quality and regularity of their creative practice.
